Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation, and SanStone must spend a lot of money to stay out of trouble.
I have been in touch with various agencies over the last year and a half, and not one of them seems to be able to find anything wrong.
The most recent conversation I had was with the QIO. That stands for quality improvement organization. I was encouraged by one of their own employees to file a complaint with them. I did so reluctantly, not knowing what they could do. Well not to surprise me they didn't find anything wrong with the quality of care Mom received at Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation.
After receiving the letter from the QIO, I did like I always do, and called them. It never ceases to amaze me how they immediately get on the defence. They verbally attack you, and make sure you understand that you are an idiot. They also let you know that there is no disputing their conclusions.
I spoke to the person, who originally responded to my complaint, she was extremely rude and unsympathetic. I mentioned some of the terrible things that happened to Mom, at Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation. Her response, was that their team of professionals found no quality of care issues. After realizing that our conversation was going nowhere, I asked to speak to her boss. Her name was Linda Moore, as I ran down my list of issues, they were surprisingly not quality of care issues. I was informed that their professionals had done their review, and that was that. I spoke to her on specific incidents that had occurred. She was not able to tell me if anything I mentioned was an issue. She repeated the mantra, that their team of officials had done their review. There is no way to appeal their decision and nowhere else to go. I went to their website, and discovered that they were also a branch of NCDHHS.
I recently read an article on the OIG, the enforcement arm of the DHHS. I will post the link below. After reading, you would think they were very serious about the entire regulation process. The article even says that "it happens everywhere", well that just doesn't sit right with me. I will continue to file complaints and make noise, until someone listens. This is where we are all going to end up sooner or later. Unless you actually believe that when you get old, some family member is going to take care of you till you die. Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation , SanStone Health and NCDHHS. I have been posting information on how to file a complaint against nursing homes. Now I am going to give some examples of what happens in these places. I have been doing research on this since Mom died November 3, 2011. I will give some examples of what II have read on the DHHS website. At the end of my post, I will give the links where you can read them for yourself.
-The wrong medication was administered to a man at Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation. His blood pressure dropped so low that he was sent to Pardee Hospital to be monitored. The reason he was given the wrong medication, was he was not properly identified by the person administering the medication.
- A resident at Beystone (another SanStone property) was left in the same clothes for almost three days. The clothes were soiled with food that spilled when she was eating. At one point, she was actually given a shower, and after she was dressed in the same soiled clothes.
- According to a relative of a resident at Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation, another resident was lifted by a nurse, and dropped. She died ten days later. The cause of death on her death certificate was dementia, it was amended later by the coroner. The actual cause of death was subdural hematoma, bleeding on the brain.
- At one facility, the air conditioner went out on one of the wings. A patient died from the heat. They didn't even move the residents to the dining room or somewhere else where the air was working.
-At another facility, a woman, who was prone to wandering, escaped from her room. She was able to enter the kitchen, where she drank a cleaning chemical that killed her.
- At another facility, a wandering patient was able to escape to the parking lot. She was run over by someone backing out, and killed.
- Another patient suffered a pressure ulcer on her leg, it was left untreated. The patient lost her leg.
These are just some of the stories I have heard or read since this all began. These are the ones you hear about. A lot of people die in these places, and dead people cant tell their horror stories.

In Henderson County there were 39 complaints, of those only 5 were substantiated! That is hard to believe if you have ever been in a nursing home.
Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation had 9 complaints - 1 substantiated on re certifications, there were 46 pages of deficiencies!
Beystone had 5 complaints - 0 substantiated however on re certification, they found 52 pages of deficiencies!
Brian Center had 3 complaints - 0 substantiated - on re certification, they had 10 pages of deficiencies
Carolina Village had 2 complaints - 0 substantiated - on re certification, they had 2 pages of deficiencies
Golding Living Center had 7 complaints - 0 substantiated - on re certifications, they had 11 pages of deficiencies.
Lifecare Center had 3 complaints - 1 substantiated - on re certification, they had 51 pages of deficiencies!
Mountain Home Health and Rehabilitation had 3 complaints - 1 substantiated - on re certifications, they had 17 pages of deficiencies.
The Laurels had 3 complaints - 1 substantiated - on re certification, they had 8 pages of deficiencies.
Universal Healthcare had 5 complaints - 0 substantiated - on re certification, they had ten pages of deficiencies.
This is a serious situation, these people were someone's relatives. We are all getting older, do you really want to risk having any of these things happen to you, or someone you love. Regarding SanStone, Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation .
As I stated in my last entry, here is where you can file a complaint if you suspect that someone is or has been in a nursing home has been mistreated.
The first step is to file a complaint with the Ombudsmans office, dont expect that to get you anywhere. They seem to be relatively close to the owners of these facilities. When I spoke to the Terry Collins at the Land of the Sky Regional Council in Asheville, she seemed to think there were plenty of things wrong. However they could not help me. Next there is the NCDHSR, you can file a complaint with them at Nursing Home and Health Care Complaint Line (For hospitals, group homes, and other health care facilities): 1-800-624-3004 or you can file online at :http://www.ncdhhs.gov/dhsr/ciu/filecomplaint.html
Just to give you a heads up, they arent really that intrested in finding out the truth either. If you file a complaint with them, expect an original contact, then maybe two months later you will get the response. I am posting a link to the patients bill of rights. If you complain, use the terminology they do. They rarely find any substantiated complaints. Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation, a SanStone facility. I wonder how they celebrate mothers day. Maybe, they provide a shower to all mothers , or a clean set of bed linen , or maybe a "special meal".
My guess is that they put flowers everywhere, and it's business as usual! Qperating without enough staff to provide adequate care. Which means, you will get a shower, when you complain long enough. You will get a meal, not necessarily what you asked for, but a meal none the less. And when the bed linen is soaked and smells bad enough, you will get your bed changed. This is what I witnessed while Mom was in Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation.
The staff is forced to work "short" most of the time, and they are usually stressed out and cant keep up. The result is, they get mad and the patients suffer. Sometimes the anger shows itself, in the form of patient abuse. Other times it shows simply as a lack of concern. I know that there are people working there that care, but eventually they get frustrated, and change jobs. Leaving the majority of workers left, the people who can't get a job somewhere else.
The system is so corrupt, that there is not much help if you have a complaint, or a "quality of care" issue. I've been through all of the agenciec that go by various acronyms. None of them are willing to do their jobs, and stop this cycle of abuse and death. This upcomming week, I will provide various contact information for these agencies. If you are experiencing care issues with a nursing home or long term care facility, file a complaint. If enough people fight the system we can change it.
If you have lost a loved one in one of these places, or have one currently in one, and feel they are not being treated properly, complain!

SanStone, Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation, Chris Sprenger, Michael Deloach, DR. Larry Joe Russell, Susan Habel, Lara Mooney. The common denominator between all on this list, is their connection to my Mothers death. It is still not clear the exact circumstances of her death. The only thing I know for sure is that the facts tell me something different than anyone on this list has told me. If they didn't do something wrong, why do they continue to lie. How many people die before they should, while under the "care" of these heartless individuals.I can only hope that they did not make her suffer.
Mom was in Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation, to recover from a serious surgery. She was not sick, nor was she suffering from anything that would be considered "life threatening". She had been through quite a bit since her surgery. What makes it so hard to understand, is that she was showing drastic improvements Mom had achieved all the goals set by her physical therapists, and was to be discharged the morning she died.
The State Medical Examiners Guide, states that anyone who dies from anything that is not related to what they are being treated for, should be autopsied. I begged for an Autopsy, Dr. Larry Joe Russell, Pardee Hospital, Dr. Poston , and the NC Medical Examiners office, all refused. Dr Harold Picus ( the Dr. who performed the surgery), tried to request an autopsy, and spoke to a Dr. Rawl at Pardee, and was denied.
It is amazing the lengths that people go through to protect their own. I believe, that if they had done an autopsy, they would have found that Mom's death was caused by a fall, or the administration of the wrong medication. Mom was recovering from brain surgery. The articles I have read suggest that the bone at the surgical site is not totally fused together for twelve months
The fall was not added to the records till one month after Mom's death, and shortly after I started asking questions. The possibility of medication error is evidenced in the medical records themselves in several different ways. There is no doubt in my mind, that her death was caused by a mistake at Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation, notice the use of the word mistake. It was not an accident, it was a mistake, human error!
Today is my 54th birthday, the thing I will miss the most today, is my Mom calling to say Happy Birthday. The thought of how many people miss those calls, because of the greed in the nursing home business, is overwhelming. I will continue to pursue these people till the truth is known.

Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation, SanStone, Dr. Larry Joe Russell, Christopher Sprenger, Mike Delaoch, Susan Habel, NCDHHS, Lara Mooney, Pardee Hospital. All of these have one thing in common. They were all a part of my Mothers last days on this earth.
This week was really rough, at the beginning of the week, my parents house was auctioned off on the courthouse steps. My youngest son celebrated his thirteenth birthday, without his Grandmother. It has been tough on the whole family.
Not just losing Mom, but not knowing the truth about how she died. Knowing that she spent her last hours in such a terrible place as Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation.
Today, I was going through my old emails and found one from my Mother. It was dated November 3 2010, Mom died on November 3, 2011. I am sharing it here. There is a prayer at the end of the email, please take a moment to read down to the end. I will do my best to say this prayer each morning.

from me my world, as I knew it. I had to start
over many times. I
often struggled with the temptation to quit, only to
somehow muster the
strength to pick up and begin again. I spent
many nights on my knees in
prayer, asking for help and guidance in my life.
I had often been held
up to ridicule, which I endured painfully, each time
offering it up to
the Father in hopes that I would not melt within my
skin beneath the
judgmental gaze of those who unfairly judged me.
And now, I had to face the
truth. My life was what it was,
and I had to accept it for what it was.
I rose and slowly lifted the
combined squares of my life to
the light.
An awe-filled gasp filled the
air. I gazed around at the
others who stared at me with wide eyes.
Then, I looked upon the
tapestry before me. Light flooded the
many holes, creating an image, the face of
Christ. Then our Lord stood
before me, with warmth and love in His eyes. He
said, 'Every time you
gave over your life to Me, it became My life, My
hardships, and My
struggles.
Each point of light in your
life is when you stepped aside and
let Me shine through, until there was more of Me than
there was of you.'
May all our quilts be
threadbare and worn, allowing Christ to shine through!
God determines who walks into
your life...it's up to you to
decide who you let walk away, who you let stay and who
you refuse to let go.'
God is all you need.
Father, bless all my family
and friends in whatever it is that
you know they may need this day! And may their
life be full of your
peace, prosperity and power as he/she seeks to have a
closer relationship with you. Amen.

As I faced my Maker at
the last judgment, I knelt before the
Lord along with all the other souls.
Before each of us laid our
lives like the squares of a quilt
in many piles; an angel sat before each of us sewing
our quilt squares
together into a tapestry that is our life.
But as my angel took each
piece of cloth off the pile, I
noticed how ragged and empty each of my squares
was. They were filled
with giant holes. Each square was labeled
with a part of my life that
had been difficult, the challenges and temptations I
was faced with in
every day life. I saw hardships that I endured,
which were the largest
holes of all.
I glanced around me.
Nobody else had such squares. Other

Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation and Beystone Health and Rehabilitation are both part of the SanStone group of Nursing and Rehab centers. Sanstone also operates StoneCreek Health and Rehabilitation in Asheville, Madison Health and Rehabilitation in Mars Hill, Sanford Health and Rehabilitation in Sanford and Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation in Winston Salem. Their website states how they care for patients like they are family.
The website also says they " offers an unusually personal touch at a time in life when compassion and genuine friendship can be the difference between adequate medical treatment and truly superior healthcare." I have been in a SanStone facility, and I would agree that their personal touch is "unusual". Not in a good way!

I have been in a SanStone facility, and I would agree that their personal touch is "unusual". Not in a good way!

Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation. You can see for yourself, what kind of care they provide. Keep in mind that the survey was done in a short period of time. The employees are also aware that they are being inspected!
